Great mental health is the product of many things. Emotionally its about healthy boundaries, great relationships, self confidence and sometimes integrating those traumatic experiences so they no longer dictate your life.
Whilst we often cannot change the stressors around us, there are many ways I can help you change the way you react to that stress. This might look like using herbs or mind/body techniques to initially settle the nervous system, and then taking a deeper dive, using Root Cause Therapy and Somatic Trauma release techniques, to help shift deep-seeded emotions and limiting beliefs.
On a biochemical level there is also a lot at play- Factors like nutritional deficiencies, toxins, infections and heavy metals can all reap havoc on our mental health. All of these areas are considered and addressed during our sessions.
Together we can find the tools that feel most comfortable for you. In most cases there is a leveling of mood reasonably quickly..
However, for long term stability and success, there are several key areas which are vital for great mental health. Together we can investigate which, (if any) of these might need support or correction.
Most people have heard of the MTHFR genes and how mutations in this group can reap havoc on many aspects of your health. What many don’t realise is that there are many other genes which relate to mental health- both directly and indirectly- and govern areas like detoxification, histamine production and clearance, neurotransmitters (brain chemicals), cortisol, and inflammation.
All of these play a pivotal role in the balance for mental health. There are several testing options which can be used in order to obtain a deeper understanding of what is going on for you as an individial.
Pyrroles are a naturally occurring byproduct of haemoglobin synthesis. While it is normal for humans to have low levels of pyrroles in their urine, around 10% of the population have an impaired ability to metabolise them- and unfortunately, pyrroles are neurotoxic, meaning higher levels can generate symptoms like:
Pyrroles testing is a specialised functional test.
Mineral status underpins our neurochemical stability, acting as essential building blocks in neurotransmitter synthesis, receptor modulation, mitochondrial ATP production, and regulation of the HPA axis. Imbalances or deficiencies in key minerals can alter inflammatory and stress response, and increase behaviours like anxiety, depression, poor concentration, and much more. Here at the Lab we use a combination of bloodwork and Hair Mineral analysis to accurately identify where the imbalances lie.
When the gut ecosystem is inflamed or imbalanced, it doesn’t just affect digestion — it shifts neurotransmitter production, immune signalling, and vagal tone. Dysbiosis can amplify anxiety, low mood, irritability and brain fog through inflammatory cytokines and altered serotonin metabolism. Here at the Lab we do several different types of stool/ gut testing in order to help tailor your plan.
Often overlooked, this is a very common driver of mood disorders. A food sensitivity can drive ‘low and slow’ inflammation which can interrupt hormones and brain chemistry, and hinder your ability to digest and absorb the nutrients in your food – (which at the secondary level will then also interrupt your neurochemistry).
Our hormones are commonly blamed for the state of our mental health, and rightly so. An imbalance in our thyroid, testosterone or progesterone levels can reap havoc on our moods. Regaining a happy hormonal system is one key to stable and happy emotions. We offer saliva and urine testing options- depending on your individual circumstance.
